Higher Education Summit for Global Development

By invitation only, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings will convene a Higher Education Summit for Global Development in Washington, DC on April 29-30, 2008. Extending the vision of the 2006 University Presidents Higher Education Summit, the goal of the 2008 Summit is to expand the role and impact of U.S. and foreign higher education institutions in worldwide social and economic development.
The Summit will broaden partnerships and networks amongst U.S., other developed country and developing country higher education institutions, the private sector and foundations; highlight and expand emerging and innovative approaches to teaching, research, technology transfer and business development; and develop strategies to establish new and enduring higher education relationships for international development, particularly in science and technology, engineering and other fields that support innovation and economic growth.
Regional Bureau Meetings
USAID Bureau for Europe and Eurasia

The Europe and Eurasia Bureau will host a reception on April 30 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The reception program will include brief remarks by USAID and private partners on sustaining partnerships, public-private partnerships, and development priorities for the Europe and Eurasia region. The evening will provide an added opportunity for representatives of higher education institutions, corporations and foundations to discuss their respective interests in the region with other conference attendees.
The Bacon House is located 4 blocks from the U.S. Department of State (main building) and is one of Washington's historic landmarks that currently serves as home to the Bacon House Foundation and the Diplomatic and Consular Officers Retired (DACOR).

The Sub-Saharan Africa regional meeting offers a regionally-focused forum for the professional exchange of knowledge and skills related to higher education in Africa. The goals of the regional meeting are to debrief on the Summit related to forging new or expanded partnerships based on the outcomes and ideas of the Summit; critique a new Initiative to develop a framework for long-term investments in African Higher Education institutions; and plan for a follow-up Regional Summit in Africa to take place in late 2008 or early 2009.

USAID for Asia and USAID Bureau for Middle East

The Asia and Middle East regional meeting will include officials from USAID, the U.S. Department of State and Washington’s diplomatic community to address developing university and private sector partnerships with schools of higher education from the regions. The intent of the meeting is to contribute to real, mutually-beneficial partnerships that broadening partnerships and networks between higher education institutions within Asia and the Middle East; share innovative approaches for establishing enduring higher education relationships with a specific focus on science, technology, engineering and improved business and management; and link academia and entrepreneurship to train the next generation of employees through curriculum, scholarships, exchanges, mentoring and new technologies.

The Western Hemisphere regional meeting will focus on the role of Higher Education institutions and the private sector in increasing regional global competitiveness. The meeting will provide a platform to promote dialog between and among higher education institutions from the region, existing and potential U.S. higher education institution partners, and the private sector on topics such as competitiveness opportunities and challenges, regional workforce development needs, innovative approaches and lessons learned from higher education/private sector partnerships.
